Gospelcon 2006 is done

Instead of trying to pull together words from my exhausted mind, I decided to do my first video cast.

My Laptop almost blew up

My Laptop battery was bowing as it was about to pop open from the heat

I’ve been having problems with my laptop for the past week or so with it randomly turning off (with 45 minutes of battery left), my mouse button not working very well and it getting hot enough to fry eggs on (quite literally).

Today I pulled my laptop out of its bag and realized it was bowing - and that freaked me out. Being at a geek conference it felt like the whole room looked at me wondering what was going on with my battery.

One guy standing next to me wigged out, grabbed the battery, and threw it across the room. His next action was pushing my head to the floor as he yelled to the rest of the conference hall “For the love of God - Everyone get down - it’s going to blow!”.

Actually - that never happened. What really happened was a few guys told me to leave and go straight to an Apple store (luckly only 15 minutes away) and get a new battery.

Showing it to the Genius Bar at the Apple store was interesting as all of them stopped what they were doing to look at my battery. I heard some muttering back and forth after I jokenly asked if my battery was supposed to change form.

I remember hearing one guy say - “Wow, it actually got hot enough to seperate the cover from the battery”. A few minutes later I was handed a new battery with no questions asked. They said have a nice day and I was gone with all my problems now solved.

Nobody threw Tomatoes

Late nights seem to be a theme at almost every conference I attend. The sessions are great for (hopefully) learning something new but after their all done is when the true conference spirit emerges.

It usually starts in the hallways but almost always ends in a local restaurant or pub. There will usually be 3-10 people hanging out and sharing stories, and the stories are where everything comes alive. You get to hear what your peers are doing and how their accomplishing things, they help you figure out hard problems and in return you do the same for them.

This all being said - my session on “Web Workflow” came together quite nice - at least that’s what people have been telling me. I felt as if things started out a bit rough but after a few minutes into the hour and a half presentation, I felt it worked itself out.

Afterwards I had the privilege of talking with a good number of people that wanted to know more and a few more that I met up with later in the evening to continue the thoughts around what I presented.

Web Workflow is a huge deal and many people don’t know how to handle it effectively. This isn’t to say I’ve got it all figured out but I have spent quite a bit of time personally struggling with it and working through many different issues.

I’m just glad I’m able to pass on what I’m learning and hear how others try to accomplish some of the same things.

Chicago Grand Ballroom

Holy crap, I just saw the room that I’m speaking in - it’s huge!

It’s a 9,633 square foot Grand Ballroom, their largest meeting room, that accommodates up to 1,200 guests. If that many people show up I’m going to freak out.

A large ballroom with green rows of carpet with a honeycomb style ceiling with light from each octagon

That said, I highly doubt that many people will show up to my session. I don’t even if that many people are coming to the conference (shrug). Here’s a few of the other rooms.

Speaking at Gospelcon 2006

It’s a little after 1:00am (EST) and I’m in a hotel room just finishing up some presentation slides that I’ve been working on for a good 8+ hours today.

I’m speaking tomorrow later today at the Gospelcon 2006 conference on Web workflow - From “concept” to “creative” to “completion”: How to gather thoughts, define goals and set requirements in order to translating them into a successful plan and communication strategy.

If you’re not able to make it to the event, go ahead and download my slides (23MB PDF) and pull as much information from it as you’re able. I’m pretty excited about it but ready to fall asleep.

I’ll update the site later on how everything went.
