Choosing a Merchant Provider

The next step in the development for both Eventable and 7dots was setting up a merchant account. For any of you thinking about getting a merchant account or wanting to take credit cards online (without using PayPal), just know your not alone if you’re confused by all the details and marketing speak. I don’t need to go into all the details as we’ve already done that but if you can make it through all of it, you’ll feel pretty good about yourself.

I thought I would quickly share who we went with and who else we looked at.

Get out while you can

Living and working in one area for to long can get really boring and stiffen the creative perspective on the world around you. So when there’s a chance to leave, it’s important you take the change in your day and experience something different.

For me, it was a meeting in Chicago to kick-off a project with a new client. Going up on Wednesday morning for meetings that day and finishing the remaining meetings on Thursday, I had the team drop me off in the heart of Chicago on our way home.

I didn’t have a place to stay or any plans but was excited to remove myself from my everyday practice. After about an hour or so of walking around Michigan Avenue and being told that every hotel had no available rooms due to some plastic conference in the area, I finally ended up at the Four Point Shariton hotel, which is about a block off of Michigan Ave and 2 blocks from the Apple store.

Anyways - the stay so far has been a great break.

Da Vinci Code - the book

Last year my parents bought be the Da Vinci Code book by Dan Brown as a Christmas gift. You can never go wrong getting me a book for a gift.

The book had been sitting on my shelves for months, just waiting for me to pick it up. It was used for a few weeks when Jodi read it over, but its origional owner never took it out for a relaxing read until today.

I’ve been reading way to many business/project management and weblogs and my brain needs a break from the strain those topics and sites can bring. I decided to jump on the Da Vinci Code band wagon and give myself a relaxing mental journey.

Normally don’t read books that have a movie but with everything that is going on in the world right now around this book, I mine as well join.

Right now I’m on chapter 4 and already have a hard time putting it down.

Eventable late night conversation

A conversation between Dan and I about our new web app called Eventable. Rushing out of the gate much faster than 7dots.

Daniel Morrison - why is the event link editable on this page? or editable at all?
Aaron Schaap - because people will want to copy it, put it into an email - place it on a website
Daniel Morrison - oh, and the average person is too stupid to copy plain text? I hate people.
Aaron Schaap - haha, what if it ends up wrapping
Daniel Morrison - what if it ends up filling your box?
Aaron Schaap - lol - this is the stupidest conversation I’ve had all day
Daniel Morrison - should we consider doing.. eventable.com/2006/07/04/eventable-launch-party
Aaron Schaap - I don’t think dates will be that good - people may change their mind on an event date
Daniel Morrison - yeah
Aaron Schaap - especially on donations
Daniel Morrison - sure
Daniel Morrison - i would like prettier URLs though and giving up your internal IDs is generally a bad idea, so at least /registration/248763
Daniel Morrison - or, do like ma.gnolia does, and use random words
Aaron Schaap - companyname.eventable.com/register/for/event-name/
Daniel Morrison - /regisration/usurpable
Daniel Morrison - ooh, i like that
Daniel Morrison - the for seems superfluous, but it is cool
Aaron Schaap - yea - it does nothing other than be cool
Aaron Schaap - later - we’ll have a section off our marketing site talking about how cool /for/ is
Daniel Morrison - haha, ok
Aaron Schaap - we’ll make him a celebrity
Aaron Schaap - damn - /for/ is so cool and gets /all/ the girls
Daniel Morrison - haha
Daniel Morrison - ok, now this is the stupidest conversation I’ve had all day

The Making of Kendall

Besides the recent redesign, I’ve been keeping rather quiet here on theParagon, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been saying anything online. Kendall College of Art and Design recently awarded us a contract to redesign/develop their website, DVD and Viewbook.

What we’ve decided to do as an agency is blog on our experiences going through the process, try as much as possible to show others what it’s really like to work on a project from scratch. The blog can be found by pointing your browsers to http://kendall.imagegroup.com/ and it called (possibly only by myself), “The Making of Kendall”.

I’ve already started posting a few notes and hope to get more people to join in the discussion. One tricky thing about the website is that the people at Kendall don’t know about this newly developed blog. If they find it - cool, we hope they join the conversation, for now, we’re only spreading the word through our personal websites and comments on other inspirational websites.

So if watching how an advertising agency attacks a project - stop by, ask a lot of questions and see what we have going on.
