What to do with an Idea

Ideas come from anything and everything but knowing what to do with those ideas is what hinders people from making one successful. So that question begs to be asked - “What should I do with my idea?”.

My suggestion? Nothing!

The problem people have (myself included) is talking to others about your idea. You get all excited and before you’ve thought everything through, you begin talking to people about your vision.

You’ll usually bring up the idea to people that could help make it happen but the problem is that you have no clue yourself. Instead, don’t say a word. Begin writing things down and taking time to get away or walk through issues in your head.

This does a few things - by spending time thinking through your idea(s), you begin to figure out how to make it all happen and who should really be involved. If it’s really a good idea - more will unfold and a bigger picture will come to light.

The second reason it’s important to do nothing is for the well known issue of human laziness. The simple act of telling people of an idea gives a rush of enjoyment and excitement that makes you feel you no longer need to do anything because you feel alive just talking about it.

Lastly (and possibly most important), if you begin talking about your idea before you’ve had time to do nothing about it - you’ll have no set of standards when discussing your idea with others. Someone else may not get your vision and tell you it won’t work or that it will work but you need to do “this” and/or “that” for it to be successful. At that very moment, you’re beginning to follow their vision and their idea [1].

So when you think you’ve got a new idea for something - do nothing. Sit on it, think through the issues and figure out what the idea means to you. Once you’ve had a chance to do this - you can begin doing something.

[1] This quite often results in the stealing of ideas.

Slight changes but getting inspired

Slight changes are beginning to happen to theParagon and we hope to continue making changes during the next few weeks (when we get time). We have a few ideas of how we want things to look and we’re going to spend a bit more time on “Content Design”.

The wife will hopefully have a little bit different header when we get around to it but for now, continue reading her lovely writings and rants.

Camino 1.0b2 is out

Not that it’s a huge deal but I switched my default browser a few months ago from Safari to Camino. I was getting bored working in the same browser all the time and the interface didn’t seem to inspire me anymore. The Camino project has worked to create a browser that is as functional and elegant as the computers it runs on. - it just made sense to switch.

The other day they released Camino 1.0 beta 2 and a few cool things were added/fixed that I wanted to point out.

Canvas support

Camino now supports HTML <canvas>. This probably means nothing to a majority of people that read my site but with the HTML cavas tag you can do visual things with code like an image reflection.

Seperate Icon Cache

My browser bookmarks showing each sites favicon Camino also added a separate cache for site icons, ensuring that crashing doesn’t erase all the site icons anymore.

It was becoming annoying to come back from a browser crash or glitch only to find all my bookmark icons missing. I’m glad this was taken care of. It’s such a small detail but feels great when resolved.

There are, of course, a lot of other things that helped make 1.0b2 come out and I’m thankful to everyone that contributed to the development. Keep up the good work everyone :-)

Wilderness 2005

Each year a group of buddies take off for the wilderness to reclaim not only our manhood but to re-connect with each other and the simplicity of the world we live in.

Our cabin has no electricity, running water, lights, or traditional heat. We keep ourselves warm by throwing logs into a black metal stove by the wall and keep light by candles placed along the table and window sills. Our water is located outside a ways and needs to be pumped out of a well into a bucket to be used for drinking and cooking.

This tradition has lasted a solid 7 years since we first discovered the rustic beauty of Wilderness State Park and strong plans to continue for years to come. The same group of guys, the same place and same rejuvenation to head into another year of life.
