Project Light Speed

There is good news for consumers! Because of recent policy clarifications by the Federal Communications Commission, SBC has accelerated its schedule to deploy over 38,000 mile of fiber optics cable in its 13 state region. This will bring fiber closer to homes and businesses and set the stage for new generation technologies like television programming over broadband lines, providing yet another alternative to cable and satellite offerings.

Also in the near future, SBC will be offering faster broadband services, Voice Over Internet Protocol, and wireless bundles of products and services.

That’s the good news. On the other side, at least one Michigan Public Service Commissioner is suggesting these new services be regulated, a sure way to slow down deployment and possibly divert company resources where there is no state intervention.

If any of you are interested I have a letter from the State President Gail Torreano, and two short clips from the Detroit News and Associated Press.

Holland BPW already has a fiber network, and it’s expanding every day… I know they have a line down 32nd right by your house actually. They had to run a new one down 32nd all the way to the new fire station in Park Township, so the west side is well served now.

The problem with the BPW is that they don’t play with anyone else. They have a ton of fiber but when approached, they sit there and debate on if they should allow access to it. Then they either say no or they say later.

I know of a few companies/people that have tried this and are now putting in their own fiber lines to simply get things done.

a friend of mine has fiber optics. When his family moved into a new development, BPW installed fiber, but they put theres a router that seriously caps his speed.

SBC will win in the fiber optic market, if only the feds leave them alone and stop trying to see how much money they can profit in their federal taxes! SBC touche’ and away!
