These are my thoughts while watching the The Live Democratic Convention playing through my Television this late afternoon
As I’ve said before, I’m not much of a political person but it’s something that I find myself listening to and watching when things get closer to elections.
Tonight, while flipping through channels, I noticed the Democratic Convention being broadcasted on C-SPAN. John Edwards (Democratic Vice Presidential Nominee) was giving his speech and while Jodi was slowly falling asleep on the couch, I decided to see what he had to say.
My Thoughts
First of all, who ever is/was in charge of event planning needs to be fired. Within the first 40 minutes of watching everything - nothing seemed natural. I didn’t know what exactly they were trying to do and I don’t think they did either. Everything seemed incredibly awkward.
His words didn’t seem from the heart at all but something that we were supposed to blindly follow because he was the person he was. Everything he said was fine but beside the point. It was all playing on people’s emotions and completely avoiding solid solutions.
Things went quickly from the speech given by John Edwards (who by the way looks way to close to Clay Aiken), to what sounded like a 70-year old white lady yelling out in perfect school English clarity - “Who wants to get it started?” while Black Eyed Peas came running out.
When this happened old men in business suit, women in their 60’s, and veterans all stood up and started to shake what they thought was “their stuff”.
Everything seemed so fake it was awkwardly hilarious - kinda like those fake Christian Television network stations you wish would go away. You watch it and it’s just a joke, but there’s something about it that makes you want to keep watching to see what happens. It’s almost as if you are waiting for someone to start laughing because they can’t keep in the joke they are playing on everyone watching. They realize their lines are just to funny to not laugh.
I just can’t take this stuff serious.

Add to the discussion.
The political comic on the Sentinel Editorial page has been about the convention for the past two days. Each comic mentions that the whole thing is scripted - the reason for the un-natural feeling. Personally, I don’t care about conventions.
I have to disagree here Aaron. I’ve been watching the convention every night and in general I have been super impressed with the democrats. While political conventions are just that, political, I have found a lot of hope under this ticket. As a nation we are not well respected in the world or even at home. Kerry has decided to run a positive campaign that focuses on creating allies to create a more peacful world. It is not by being a black belt that makes a person safer it is by having more friends. That is a main difference between the republicans and democrats this election year. Add this to tougher environmental standards, tax breaks for corporations who are staying in the U.S. and not moving jobs out of the country, and more money for education over weapons of mass destruction.
So even though these conventions are a little weird and poltical I support Kerry and urge others to do so.
I’m not saying Kerry or Democrats are a joke - I’m saying their convention is a joke. Kerry has a lot of good things to say but again - the convention is stupid.
As a note though Ben, the U.S. has been disliked for years - it is not the direct result of Bush, Clinton, Bush or Reagan… there are many factors, and there is no way Kerry will be able to suddenly rectify this problem. It would require a change in mindset of all Americans, and, to ask that, is impossible.
To ask that is not impossible. The fact that so many americans have so much and are completely out of touch with the rest of the world’s struggles is what pushes this country into “Dark” times.
We’re there and it’s our fault for not realizing that our leaders have led us there over the last 200 + years.
I thought the convention was a joke as well, anyone who actually believed what kerry and edwards said was from the heart is lost. There was more heartfelt conversation in one episode of the Osbournes ’ than the entire week of conventioness.
Bush sucks but how many people have figured out the the Dem’s are just feeding you what you want to hear to get the votes. Coincidental that their running on the opposite view and ground from bush ? Of course not.
Once again the american people are left with no choice for real change. Only promises… since when have they kept those?
