Projecting the Terminal

A movie projector is a device that continuously moves film along a path so that each frame of the film is stopped for a fraction of a second in front of a light source. The light source provides extremely bright illumination that casts the image on the film through a lens onto a screen.

Last night while Ben W, Cara, Jodi and I were at the watching The Terminal, starring Tom Hanks, the movie started flipping around. All of the sudden the film started going out of sink and everyone quickly began to realize that this was indeed, not part of the film.

What really gave it away though was when the film actually caught on fire.

After sitting there watching the film quickly disintegrate before our eyes, people started to get up and walk around. Some had already left to tell management of the recent happenings while others quietly began to talk about the situation.

With this unexpected pause in the movie it was a great time to get more movie treats and beverage for sipping. While waiting for our food, Ben W. and I struck up a conversation with one of the workers and asked if he could tell us what happened.

The BRAIN (as we call it) or Spool assembly is an area where the film begins to wrap around various gears before actually passing across the viewable area.

What happened was - the film got all tangled up and stuck. As soon as it got stuck it sort of flipped out. Film sprung out all over the room and that’s when you (the audience) saw the film burning on the screen.

This was all very amazing to Ben and I and while waiting for them to fix everything, we got to tell the story to various people in the theater.

After about 15 minutes the movie started playing again. We ended up missing a few minutes of the film due to it burning up but everyone got caught up real quick.

When the credits started to roll, we all got up, smiled and walked for the doors. You see, we all new that we were going to get a free movie pass for this little miss-hap and would be able to watch another movie as a guest of the theater in a couple days.

aaron it was good to read up on what ‘yer doin’ lately… i think of you and jodi and the baby quite often, and when i do i get this grin and think, “i wonder if aaron will attempt to digitize his child and make his child’s hair stand up and catch an electrical fire” - actually, i have only once thought that - right now. i am no longer thinking of such a thing.

now i am thinking about how wickstrahead and carabrain are doing with life.

now i am thinking about whether or not it’s raining right now in holland. i say no.
