The Choice between two Jobs

Throughout life your given tests to see what you’re really made of and if what you’re doing is really what you should be doing.

Recently I’ve been (officially) approached by a company in Warren, Michigan to come work for them as a Digital Programmer. My main job would be to develop in XHTML and CSS as well as teach others the beauty of these languages and the semantics of web documents.

I’d more than likely get a super sweet computer and get to work with smart, forward thinking individuals - all while sitting in an creatively designed atmosphere.

The pay would be really good and they would take care of me while moving into the new city. I would get a generous amount of vacation along with 14-16 days of Holiday vacation.

The only problem with this all is - Elevator Up. Yup - that company I started with high hopes.

Elevator Up is going strong with a good client list and actual paying customers. I’ve started the g33ks group and even though it’s just started, people are excited about it and signing up.

I also really like being on my own and getting to work on things that I want to work on. I’m able to move in the directions I feel are best and I’m able to spend more time with customers than I would if I was a programmer.

Having your own business is the American dream but it’s also a lot of hard work and the pay isn’t always consistent. You often fret over what to do next and it usually takes a couple years before you really start to see a solid return.

Working for another company would be nice because I would have money right now and I would get to be in a nice building with nice people. It would also get me out of Holland.

That said - I actually do like Holland and have had the opportunity to meet and do business with many of the people in it. I know I’m just rambling here but the point is - it’s a tough decision and I’m torn on what exactly is best.

To add to the mix - I have till this coming Tuesday to give them my response.

So if you’re sitting on a pile of advise for me right now, I’d love to hear it.

Chris Says:

I can’t exactly be objective on this; my position is clear.

However, I have nothing but sympathy for your competing interests in this manner. I’ll try to be up on IM as much as possible if you want to chat about this.

Bill Creswell Says:

If I was just to judge by their website, I’d say the official corporate job would be much less interesting.

However, money is sometimes a good thing.
