Good design - client hated
_11:56
A client of mine (actually this company I work for) came in today and the first thing he said was “I hate it!” — Not a how are you doing, not a handshake, not even a HELLO. The guy just said he hated the design.
I could go on about the random remarks of why he thought this was a horrible design and that his users and other chapters would slap him in the face for even displaying a design like this.
I could explain to you how much of a better designer he is because he went to a design school 80 years ago and I could even gloat on his philosophy that you need to do things different just for the sake of them being different.
But I won’t. Plus - I won’t even bring up the fact that he is using a newspaper’s layout to explain how people want to read things on the web.
In fact - I can only wish to some day be a “newspaper - site - developing - make - people - think - on - how - to - get - around - change - any - common - navagation - wording - into - something - most - people - would - never - accociate - with - and - doing - things - different - simply - to - be - different - whether -usablity - plays - a- role - or - not.”
So now:
I’m coming up with a new design for him based on his enlightening suggestions. The new newspaper design should roll out in the next couple of days.
As for the site I designed for him - I’ll just turn around and offer it to a client that actually understands what professionalism is. Not to a guy that focus’s on the word, “PIZAZZ!!!!” as he shakes his head while explaining what the sole feeling(s) his users should get while viewing his site.

a fellow designer... Says:
as a designer myself…not web, but print…i completely understand your frustration. the most frustrating thing in the world is working with someone who will not open themselves up to NEW ideas. not only that…but when they think they know more about design than you…if a fellow designer has tips or ideas for me i’m very happy to listen…and of coarse the client needs to have imput…BUT i didn’t go to design school just to pass 4 years of my life away cuz i had nothing better to do…i think i know what i’m talking about to some degree. sadly in the end…”the customer is always right” who came up with that anyway? they should be shot.
