No food or Bed but i’m almost wireless

Saturday_13:50 — No Food or Bed but i’m almost wireless

Ever since I was a child I’ve been a sucker for wanting something better. I feel pretty safe in saying most people are the same way. One of my biggest problems is when I want something and then everyone starts talking about how awesome it is. Depending on what it is and how expensive it is - I’ll rack my brain on how I can get it.

I’ll agree this isn’t a good quality to have and it’s honestly gotten me in alot of trouble while growing up. Today was another instance of someone else having something and got me excited enough to buy it.

My dad now has a wireless network

No line restrictions - something every broadband geek strives for and my dad has it all set up at his house. My dad and I already have a network between our 2 houses already (I live next door, but that’s another story) and he’s let me tap into his DSL since I moved in.

It’s a pretty nice set up but thereís alot of wires. Right now the DSL comes into his home and into a router. From the router it goes into his DSL modem and then gets strung underground all the way to my house. Once it hits my house it goes right into a patch panel and then to a 14-port 10/100 base hub.

Once it’s in the hub we string all the wires into each of the 7+ computers we have at my house - counting my roommates computers).

As you can see there’s alot going on there and I’m not even allowed to walk around in my house or yard.

So I buy a wireless card

Yup - I had to have the flexibility to be anywhere and connect to my networks and the Internet. The problem now is that I can’t get the thing installed on my notebook. I’m running Win2k and it doesn’t seem to like my OS.

I’m hoping to finish this up ASAP, but D-Links tech support is only around during normal business hours. So Iím stuck sifting through old google groups asking if anyone knows of any problems with D-Link’s DWL-650 802.11b card.

I guess it serves me right for spending money on a wireless network instead of buying food or a bed to sleep on.

Aaron I had that card the dwl-650 you should return the firmware does not support ibss which is what you need so i recommend you return and get a wireless card by zoom telephonics or cisco or lucent, you won’t regret it. Also i hope you guys are doing something besides wep to secure this because if not ill be outside your house on your lan try using a vpn or a radius server.

Yea, I had to play around with it to get it to work. On WinXP it seems to be alittle harder to install. You have to do a couple tweeks and gather some drivers that weren’t given to you on their Installation CD.

Still trying to see if I get WinXP to work with it but for right now i’ll just use my W2K.

Security

Just set it up and haven’t done much to create an ultra secure network. Right now most people in my neiborhood probably have no idea what a wireless network is anyways.

I’ll be working on better security soon.

ANY IDEAS?

sweetness! my dad got us a cable connection about 2 weeks ago, and i love it. it’s so much faster. and he got a wireless card for his laptop. it’s just bizarre to see him pull out his laptop, sit at the kitchen table, and hook up to the internet — without a single wire anywhere.

Aaron yes you could set up a vpn with the connection’s, Something that would be easier would be downlood a utility that does mac authuticaton so if the mac addresss is not on the access point it will not be able to connect.

If you email me I can fill you in more.
