Warning Hotmail Users

Being it that so many of my readers have a hotmail accounts - I thought this topic was rather important.

“East Side Journal reports that without telling anyone, Microsoft has suddenly changed the privacy preferences for all Hotmail users. They’re now sharing your name and other personal information with third parties, even if you said you didn’t want that when you signed up.

(If you’re a user, login, go to Options > Personal Profile, and un-check the boxes at the bottom of that page.)” The same reporter has written a follow-up article today. [Hat tip from Slashdot.org]

What’s interesting is that I found this little fact out no more than 4 hours prior to reading this article. I was hang’in out with Ben Doornbos and he was complaining about all the SPAM he’s been getting.

Ben mentioned how he unchecked every box that referred to his email being put into any open directorys but we found this new feature while sifting through the HOTMAIL options.

If any of you guys find anything more out on this, let me know. For those Yahoo users - I’m sorry to tell ya that yahoo has been selling your email to everyone for quite some time. They even say it themselves.

Their deal is that they don’t hide it (so you can’t hate them this way). Their whole system is set up the way it is to protect your account only when you start paying. That’s really what everything is moving to these days - paid email service.

Aaron Schaap Says:

According to many people - Mozilla, Opera, and Konqueror users can’t access Options->Personal Profile to opt out.

There might be more but not that I know of. If you have any of these browsers you can switch the identifier to IE 5.0 and the personal profile page suddenly works perfectly.
