Sledding Pains
_13:50

Last night I went sledding with my friends, Ethan and David. We wanted to go sledding later in the evening so the thrill factor would be higher and finally left for the hills around 22:00 (10:00pm EST). We climbed up some dunes and when we got to the top we just took some time to look over the Holland area for a bit.
After a couple minutes of that - along with trying to catch our breaths, we hopped onto the sleds and went down the other side.
The other side of the dune is what we call “The BOWL” and the bowl is a huge sand valley that’s perfect for sledding. We spent a good while going up and down the dunes and trying to drop into the bowl from various (might I add - unsafe) cliff edges.
None of us got hurt here though - minus the random scraps from icy snow when we fell off the sled. You see, there aren’t any trees in the bowl you need to worry about and that’s what makes is such a great place.
After awhile we decided to go back. Running up and down sand dunes can really make a guy wish for new legs. The hike on the way back wasn’t that bad until we had to go down one more hill.
Sledding down this hill would get us down faster than if we walked but we still decided to walk. We only walked for a couple feet until we all slipped and went flying down the hill. At this point the hill owned us and all we could do was yell.
I couldn’t see what was happening to anyone else because I was currently being tossed down the dune side. I do however know exactly what happened to me.
I tried to gain control (my first mistake) and when I got one foot stuck in the sand for support the dune tossed me into a double flip face plant. Face plants aren’t the worse thing to ever happen to a guy being hurled down a dune, but a face plant into a log is something I can only explain as “I want to die” pain.
That’s right - I hit a log with my face and that’s what finally stopped me. Of course my friends didn’t get hurt at all and they thought it was rather amusing.
Alot of blood started coming out of the left side of my face and intense pain followed. After awhile of yelling the pain started to become numbed from the cold weather. We had a mile walk back to our car and by the time I got back it didn’t hurt so bad.
Now once those heaters kicked on in the car it felt like a metal wire inside my face and it didn’t stop burning. Finally after I got home I cleaned myself off, put a bandage over it and called it a night.
Today’s lesson: Don’t try to gain control - ever.
