_17:45
Today just crushed me - I started this new job at the Holland Sentinel as a Ad Salesman. I have never hated a job so much on the first day. Even worse - nothing was explained in detail. I was this kid that came out of nowhere and all of the sudden in a group of people who already knew who they wanted to be with and who they didn’t want to be with.
They were really nice people but they just gave off the impression that they didn’t want to bother with me. Maybe it’s just a completely different atmosphere than the one(s) i’m used to. I’m usually around designers (web &print) - those type of people are usually pretty fun.
On top of that everyone was down for some reason or another. The economy isn’t doing so great and affecting alot of people - Newspapers included. Everyone was stressed out and/or yelling about injustices.
I finally left at 4:45 because I couldn’t handle it anymore. All I know is that I don’t want to go back. More than likely i’ll just call them and quit. At this point I just don’t care.

Add to the discussion.
I agree with quiting, but I think you should do it in more of a professional way. Don’t just call. Make a point to stop in there on a day you’re not working (tomorrow maybe?) and tell them that this job just isn’t working out - you don’t feel that you bring anything to the team for lack of enthusiasm. or something … but i don’t think you should just call and quit.
Just incase you wanted some specific advice … :)
I think you should tell them all to shut the hell up. The Newspaper industry(no offense to your previous job) is a relic in the making. You should know that after all the time you’ve spent being involved with the net.
I agree with that advice. I operate under the assumption that there is no such thing as a good burned bridge. You never know when a past relationship will be important. I know there is no way to make everyone happy all of the time but it’s good idea to think twice before purposefully letting someone down.
Oh, I thought my comments would show up at the bottom of the list. I should clarify that the persons advice I agree with called themself “Someone who cares”.
Just be happy you’re not in school :)
I’ll just be terse, I personally think i’d rather be out actually doing stuff in the “real world” than sitting here at school, coding insipid programming assignments in MIPS assembly that don’t actually DO anything :)
Regardless, I agree with both Shmuel and Dan … strange isn’t it? On one hand, you might want to keep in good relations with the people at the Sentinel, on the other hand, sometimes it’s nice to vent when something pisses you off :) It’s a win win situation!
btw, you might want to add a target=_new in your links, or a base target=_new at the top of your comments page so that web pages dont open up in this little pop up :)
or maybe that’s just konqueror not handling stuff correctly… anyway.
Actually .. i’ve learned to not burn bridges as well. In retrospect i should have told you to tell them to “Shut the Hell Up!” in your mind all the while carrying a nice smile on your face. Heh, who can argue with the best of both worlds.
I did it - I called them and quit my job. WOW - it was hard to pull together the courage to quit but you guys gave me the extra nerve I needed to let them know how I felt.
Ok ok, not exactly how I felt but just that I didn’t want to work there. You can read above to see what happened. Thanks again guys…
James - thanks for the tip - i’ll look into fixing that as soon as i get some time. You can write alittle code into the text box if you would like as well. Just put some tags around the link for it to pop out of the window.

Screw the Sentinel. As a dedicated employee there, I say burn every fricking bridge you can, especially their prick of a publisher. But keep on with that Derek guy - he’s going places, and in a big way.
